What comes to mind when you think of the month of May? End of school, Cinco de Mayo, beginning of summer, Mothers Day, or maybe even Memorial Day? If I am being honest, those were the things that popped into my head, but May actually has so much more significance….
Any one want to take a guess?
If you guessed Month of Military Appreciation, you guessed correctly. May is a month we honor those who have served and are serving our country. As a former military brat and current military wife, I will admit, military life is challenging for the whole family. We make many sacrifices, but the soldier is ultimately the one who selflessly puts his/her life down for others. They are the ones battling the trenches, living in barracks in war torn countries, eating MREs instead of having a nice home cooked meal with their family. All while missing holidays, births of children, and other momentous life events all for the greater good of our country. Not to mention they may also face trauma from their job which can result in challenges in life both physically, and mentally. This certainly is not a job for the faint of heart, and takes a special kind of person to do it, and May is a month where we can recognize them and their sacrifices.

May 13 Children of Fallen Patriots
The story and Inspiration behind this day is so sad and yet touching:
“The inspiration for Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation began in 1989, a few days before Christmas, when Sergeant William Delaney Gibbs of the 7th Infantry Division was killed in action during Operation Just Cause in Panama. Sgt. Gibbs left behind a young wife and an unborn daughter. Sgt. Gibbs’s heroic sacrifice inspired David Kim, a soldier who served with him, to establish Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation to provide a way to help Sgt. Gibbs’ daughter and thousands of children like her.” –Fallenpatriots.org
This day honors all those children, such as Sgt. Gibb’s daughter, whose mother/father have passed while serving our country. To learn more check out:
May 14th Mother’s Day
Ahhh Mother’s Day, a day devoted to moms. My ideal Mothers Day consists of SLEEPING IN and some me time. You may be wondering, “Kate, why is Mothers Day listed in here, what does that have to do with Military Appreciation Month?”
What about all those mothers who are deployed, or the mothers whose husbands are gone on deployment, and lets not forget mothers who lost their sons or daughters to our Country, as this day is probably a difficult one for them. Lets keep all of these moms in our thoughts and prayers( if you’re the praying type) on this day.

May 20th Armed Forces Day
On this day (usually the third saturday in may, this year it falls on the 20th) we honor and celebrate those who are in the armed forces. It is a day we recognize all they do for us to preserve and keep our country safe. For more information on this day please visit:
May 29th Memorial Day
The day we honor all those who have died for our country. Unfortunately, to many it is just a three-day weekend gateway to summer and not many observe it as the true holiday it represents. Organizations such as US Memorial Day , are trying to create national awareness for this holiday.
The National Moment of remembrance was passed in 2000 to help others observe this day by participating in a moment of silence( usually around 3pm), for more information’s visit: http://www.usmemorialday.org/?page_id=35.
