Check out some of our favorite portable careers perfect for military spouses who PCS every few years!
Wives of active service members are the glue that holds their family together while their spouse is away. They’re in charge of the monthly budgets, getting their little ones where they need to go on a daily basis, keeping up with the household chores (including repairs and yard work) taking care of the emotional needs of her children as well as those of her spouse and in some cases, holding down a full time job. While finding a 9 to 5 job might not be all that challenging for a military spouse, finding a career certainly can be. In order to begin a career as a military spouse your choice in career must be flexible but most importantly it has to be portable.
Many wives as well as husbands who have a partner in the military find themselves stuck and frustrated lot because they can’t start career that will work with their lifestyle but it’s only because they don’t know where to look to find options that could potentially work for them. For example, there are a TON of work from home options that are not only legit but that are also incredibly lucrative to boot. Knowing how tough it can be for some to find a job that allows them to be flexible and work anywhere, despite constant moves, I scoured the internet and found a handful of opportunities that would be great if you’re looking for a new career!
As a Virtual Assistant myself, this is one of my favorite start-up career choices. In today’s tech controlled society, there really isn’t much that you can’t accomplish from the comfort of your computer or over the phone. If you’re tech savvy, have decent writing skills and can navigate editorial programs or work with HTML, you’ve got a pretty decent chance at making it in the VA business. If you don’t have some of the skills already, you can even teach yourself pretty easily from home! I’ve been a VA for nine years and I absolutely love it (and working for yourself and owning your business isn’t a bad gig)!
Children’s Transportation Service
If you’ve ever gotten behind schedule, had something unexpected come up or gotten sick, then you know how valuable it would be to have someone else who could pick up your children from school, daycare or cart them to their extra-curricular activities. The beauty of this service is that you can literally do it from anywhere, no matter where your spouse gets stationed!
Child-Proof Home Consultant
When I was pregnant with my first I was terrified about all of the what-ifs and baby proofing every little thing. It was exhausting and some of the directions for products were downright confusing. As a Child-Proof Home Consultant you’ll be able to visit the home of clients and do the work for them, taking the guess work and frustration out of their lives. If I’d known such a service existed when I first had little ones I’d have hired someone in a heartbeat!
This is a fantastic work at home job for military spouses. You can work on projects like copywriting, basic document editing, e-book editing, etc. Editing work is a cinch if you have an eye for error and have great grammar skills. The best part is you can literally do it anywhere.
Quite simply, not everyone who writes or has a great idea actually loves the writing process. This is where a ghost writer comes into play. The original author will essentially hand over a rough draft or concept and pay great money for a ghost writer to put the book together for them. Another great job if you’re a stay at home military spouse looking for a lucrative career that is flexible and portable no matter where your stationed.
Online Course Content Writer
In recent years the business of being self taught via the internet has become a billion dollar industry. People pay good money to enter into online courses taught by people who have extensive knowledge in areas of interest. If you have a real zeal for research and writing, you can build your own courses and students will pay to enter your classes. The best part is that there is no experience necessary to get started in this field.
You see people doing this every day, especially on sites like Etsy and Ebay. They make their money buy buying items and turning around to sell them for a profit. Of course, it’ll cost you a bit upfront but the long term benefits outweigh the start up costs. If you like the idea of stocking and maintaining inventory then this is a great idea for you.
Obviously these are just a few of many different routes you can take if you’re looking for a flexible career while your spouse is on active duty and requires you to constantly be moving from place to place. Depending on your specific skill set or the desire to teach yourself new ones, you can find something that works for you and your families needs.
