What comes to my mind when I think about my breastfeeding days? The good, the bad and, not to mention, the downright scary parts come flooding back. I have to admit though, some of my fondest memories involved nursing my girls. I loved the special bond it created…… BUT, one of my least favorite memories was the struggle to pump! Ughhhh, what a pain! You see, with my first, I wanted to exclusively breastfeed, so I bought a cheap hand held pump, because at the time insurance didn’t cover it and we had to pay for it out of pocket :/ Unfortunately, I was hardly ever able to pump anything with it, it was such a struggle, especially when I would become engorged, or had mastitis….it was not fun. I also could not leave for long because I could never pump enough for a bottle!
Fast forward to child number two, and again, I decided to exclusively breastfeed, but wanted to be able to pump more. I heard that Tricare was covering breast pumps but there were a bunch of hoops you had to go through including prescriptions and rebates, but I wanted a new pump so I decide to give it the “old college try.” Well, I wound up getting the prescription, BUT it wasn’t the right one and I was so frustrated and gave up, leaving me to deal with my cheap hand pump once again.
Needless to say, a motorized breast pump would have changed my life and probably would have made my life a little bit easier, and let’s be honest, anything that makes those first few months easier is a win. Fortunately, you don’t have to go through what I went through because Tricare has partnered with The Breastfeeding Shop. Gone are the days of going through hoops to get the pump you need.
