Let’s talk about the unicorn in the room, literally. If you are anywhere on social media you know what unicorn I am talking about, The Unicorn Frappuccino. If you are not familiar with this drink, it is a new drink at Starbucks that is uniquely flavored and very colorful. The Frappuccino is said to be a mix of mango flavoring with white chocolate that makes up the pink color of the drink. There are also blue drizzles inside the drink which are said to be a sour flavoring. Of course, it has whip cream because well it’s, Starbucks and who doesn’t love whipped cream. To top off the drink are blue and pink “fairy powder,” which in English means some sort of colored flavored dusting.
If you have had the chance to try this majestic drink of fairy tales and mythical creatures, what was your take on it? Three seems to be a strong group of people who love the drink and about as equally strong group of people who cannot stand it. This makes sense because each person enjoys and senses things differently, especially taste. If you are on the fence about trying the drink, there are countless YouTube videos of people trying the drink. This may help make your decision, but if the videos are not enough to yeah or sway you from the drink, I wanted to break down the nutritional values.

The idea of a bright colored fun tasting drink most likely brings back memories of Kool Aid, fun dips, and child hood memories. Let’s be honest, if you are in your 30’s, like ahem myself, you know this drink equals either days of positive eating to get your metabolism back in balance or it means lots of exercising. Though there is an excitement for the drink, there is also the calories, sugar, and overall metabolizing of the drink. It’s a known fact your metabolism changes as you age. Not to say you cannot be healthy because healthy has no age. But putting a unicorn sugar bomb inside your body, may not be a good choice for someone who wants to maintain healthy eating habits.
To better understand what exactly is the nutritional value for the drink, I have made this fantastic charge to show you comparisons of the unicorn drink vs fast food restaurant food equivalents.
|Nutrition Facts||Unicorn Frappuccino||Fast Food Equivalent|
|Calories||410||Burger King Onion Rings|
|Total Fat||16g||Wendy’s Large Frosty|
|Cholesterol||45mg||Taco Bell Shredded Chicken Burrito|
|Sodium||230mg||Carl’s Jr. Strawberry Swirl Cheesecake|
|Total Carbohydrates||62g||McDonalds Big Mac Sandwich and one hash brown|
|Protein||5g||Carl’s Jr. Criss Cut Fries|
As you can see from the chart I created, the Unicorn Frappuccino contains a lot of not so great for you nutritional facts. If you consider the fast food equivalents you could say one 16oz Unicorn Frappe is the equivalent of a fast food feast for 2 or more adults. These are scary things to consider in consuming a single 16oz drink.
Now I don’t want to seem bias and please unde3rstand I am not. I am a huge fan of unicorns, all things sparkly, and bright colors but I just can’t get on the band wagon with this drink. As an occasional treat, sure, but this treat is essentially a bad nutrition buffet for your body. And hey if you are someone who eats less healthy but exercises a lot, you will not be shaken by the nutritional facts of this fairy tale style Frappe.
Though I won’t be trying this beverage, I would love to hear what you think about the new Unicorn Frappuccino. Did you like it? Did you hate it? Do you think all the social media buzz is worthy of this drink? Let us know what you think.
